Understanding Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric (weight-loss) surgery helps people with severe obesity lose a large amount of weight and improve or resolve conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea and joint pain. It works by reducing stomach size and changing gut hormones that control hunger and fullness.

The common procedures — sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass — are done laparoscopically (keyhole) with a 2–3 day stay. It is not a quick fix: results depend on a lifelong change in eating, activity and follow-up, which your Care Buddy and dietitian support.

Common Symptoms

If you have one or more of these, it's worth speaking to a specialist.

A BMI of 37.5 or above, or 32.5+ with a weight-related condition (Asian thresholds)
Type 2 diabetes that is hard to control despite medication
Obstructive sleep apnoea, fatty liver or PCOS linked to weight
Weight-related joint pain limiting daily life
Serious, repeated attempts at diet and exercise without lasting success
Being medically fit for surgery after assessment

Our specialists use the latest minimally invasive techniques wherever possible — smaller incisions, less bleeding and a faster return to daily life.

Every patient has a full pre-surgical evaluation to decide the most effective approach, and a multidisciplinary team supports your health before, during and after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sleeve gastrectomy removes part of the stomach and is simpler with fewer long-term nutritional issues. Gastric bypass is often better for reflux and diabetes. A team assessment — including a dietitian and physician — recommends the best fit for you.
