Understanding Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the retina's blood vessels from long-standing high blood sugar. Early on there are no symptoms; advanced disease causes bleeding, swelling of the central retina and, if untreated, severe vision loss.

Treatment depends on the stage — tight control of sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol for early disease, and laser, intravitreal injections or vitrectomy for advanced disease. Regular screening catches it before vision is affected.
